–Road Named Joe Irukwu Way
Former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has commended Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, for his exceptional leadership and developmental strides, describing him as a goal-getter, a man of integrity, and a visionary leader.
Obasanjo made the remarks on Friday at the commissioning of the newly reconstructed 46.3km Umuahia–Uzuakoli–Akara–Isiukwuato–Abiriba Road (Sections 1 & 2), now named Joe Irukwu Way in honour of the late President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Joe Irukwu, an illustrious son of the state.
The road, which links Umuahia North, Bende, and Ohafia Local Government Areas, is expected to boost trade, ease movement for farmers and businesses, and unlock economic opportunities for rural communities.
Speaking at the event, Chief Obasanjo praised Governor Otti’s performance, recalling his past experience on the once-deplorable road.
“This road used to be a nightmare. When I heard it now takes just 45 minutes to get from Umuahia to Abiriba, I said this man, Alex Otti, must be a miracle worker,” Obasanjo remarked. “You are a man of your word, a performer, and an example of good leadership. I say more grease to your elbow.”
The former President emphasized the need for visionary leadership and capable teams across all levels of governance, urging the people of Abia to appreciate and support Governor Otti.

“Good leaders are rare,” he said. “When you find one, like you have in Dr. Otti, don’t take him for granted. I will continue to stand by you because you are delivering results. If people are talking about you, it’s because you’re doing well. Keep doing what is right, and God will continue to bless you.”
Obasanjo also lauded Governor Otti for steering clear of transactional politics, noting that the state’s progress under his watch is proof that prudent management of resources, even in challenging times, can yield visible results.
“You came with a clear idea of what you wanted to achieve. You’re content and not here for politics as usual,” he added.
In his address, Governor Otti described the road project as a significant milestone in his administration’s drive to deliver durable infrastructure and improve the lives of Abians.
“This road is a symbol of our resolve to do things differently. Section 3—from Abiriba to Ohafia—is also nearing completion,” Otti disclosed.
He emphasized that the road would enhance security, reduce travel time, and lower transport costs for residents and businesses, adding that with the improved road network, commuters and traders could now travel at any time without fear of attacks, which were previously rampant due to the road’s poor condition.
Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, representing Abia South Senatorial District, also spoke at the event, stating that the project would bring new life to the people of the area. He commended the Otti-led administration for ensuring the continued delivery of democratic dividends.
Other dignitaries, including the lawmaker representing Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency, Hon. Obi Aguocha, and Chairman of Bende LGA, Mr. Uwabunkeonye Bassey, expressed gratitude to the State Government. They noted that the road would boost agricultural productivity in the largely agrarian communities.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Works, Engr. Otumchere Oti, provided technical details of the project. He explained that the reconstruction involved repairing failed sections with stone base and binder course, improving vertical alignments, and raising flood-prone areas. A 40mm thick asphaltic concrete wearing course was laid across the road, while shoulders were finished with 30mm asphalt.
Other key components included culverts, drainage systems, slope protection, road markings, and the installation of solar-powered street lights in built-up areas.
Engr. Oti called on residents to protect the road infrastructure and avoid activities that could damage it.
