Governor Alex Otti of Abia State

In a major shake-up at the Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU), the Abia State Government has dismissed Vice Chancellor Prof. Onyemachi Ogbulu, along with other key officials.

The news was confirmed on Monday by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a press briefing in Umuahia after the State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

The Commissioner announced that Prof. Ndukwe Okeudo has been appointed as the new Vice Chancellor, while Rt. Hon. Agwu U. Agwu assumes the role of Pro-Chancellor. Prof. Catherine Uju Ifejika has been named Chancellor, and Onwubiko Dike joins the Governing Council.

Additionally, new appointees include two Deputy Vice Chancellors, four members of the university’s Senate, two members of the congregation, a convocation representative, a representative from the Ministry of Education, and a new Bursar.

These appointments are scheduled to take effect on November 1, 2024.

Igbofacts understands that the government’s decision follows findings from a panel review of ABSU operations.

Released on October 26, 2024, the panel’s White Paper suggested an investigation into Prof. Ogbulu regarding alleged dual roles as a traditional ruler and university administrator, as well as other issues, including irregularities in the former Bursar’s academic qualifications.

The panel recommended the withdrawal of an M.Phil certificate and the termination of the PhD program of former Bursar Mr. Chucks Chikwendu Nwaogwugwu over admission anomalies.

Responding to rumours earlier, Prof. Ogbulu denied any comment until he received the full panel report.
