2025 UTME

Obiora-Nwokedi Nmesoma

Barely two years after Ejikeme Nmesoma from Anambra State was enmeshed in controversy over an alleged falsification of her 2023 UTME result, another student bearing the same first name—and also from Anambra—has made headlines, this time for an outstanding academic feat.

Obiora-Nwokedi Nmesoma, a student of Queens Convent, Awka, an institution owned by the Anglican Church, has emerged as the top scorer in her school in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), setting a new record with a remarkable score of 343 in the resit exercise.

This resit was conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) following alleged widespread technical glitches that marred the initial examination. Nmesoma had earlier received a score of 165, which was inconsistent with her academic performance and sparked confusion and disappointment.

The initial botched UTME round left many candidates across the country traumatized, with distressing reports of emotional breakdowns—including the tragic case of a student who reportedly took her own life as a result.

In an interview, the Principal of Queens Convent, Dr. Martha Ibezim, commended Nmesoma for her resilience and tenacity, and credited the student’s exceptional comeback to the school’s dedication to academic excellence and holistic development.

“Our commitment to nurturing well-rounded students through dedicated faculty, advanced learning facilities, and a rigorous academic structure is at the heart of this success,” Dr. Ibezim noted. “Nmesoma’s triumph is a proud moment for us and a strong affirmation of the quality we strive to uphold.”

Reflecting on the student’s journey, Dr. Ibezim added: “Despite the initial shock of scoring 165 due to system errors, Nmesoma remained focused and determined. With the support of her teachers and our school community, she seized the second chance and delivered an extraordinary result. Her score of 343 is both inspiring and well-deserved.”

Known for her consistent academic performance, Nmesoma has long aspired to secure admission into one of Nigeria’s leading universities. Her ability to rise above adversity has now positioned her as a beacon of hope for other students affected by the UTME mishap.

Her story not only highlights the importance of institutional support and student resilience but also reinforces Queens Convent’s status as a centre for excellence in academics and character development.
