The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Works, has officially commenced the construction of the 17.55-kilometre access road to the Second Niger Bridge (Phase 2A) in Asaba.
This critical infrastructure project aims to enhance connectivity between the South-South and South-East regions, fostering economic growth and national integration.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Mohammad Abdullahi Ahmed, the project was described as a testament to the administration’s “unwavering dedication to enhancing national road infrastructure and fostering economic growth.”
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, the Minister of Works, Engr. (Sen.) David Umahi, commended the Delta State Government for its proactive approach to infrastructure development and emphasized that governance should be centred on improving citizens’ lives.
Acknowledging the ongoing road projects in the state, including three major flyovers in Warri, he stated, “Your state is a construction site. You have demonstrated that leadership is about responsibility, not excuses. Instead of blaming the Federal Government, you are taking proactive actions. That is highly commendable.”
The Minister further outlined the Federal Government’s broader vision for road infrastructure across the country. Key projects in progress or in planning include the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, the Benin-Asaba Expressway, the Sokoto-Gusau-Katsina-Kaduna corridor, the East-West Road, and the remaining section of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Dual Carriageway.
He assured that the Federal Government had approved a 9-kilometre extension of the Benin-Asaba Expressway to the Second Niger Bridge, following a request from the Delta State Government.
To ensure the security and sustainability of the newly constructed roads and bridges, the government has implemented advanced surveillance measures. CCTV cameras will be installed along the access roads and the bridge, linked to the offices of the Governors of the concerned states to monitor activities and prevent vandalism. Additionally, solar-powered streetlights will be installed to enhance visibility and security.
Reaffirming the administration’s commitment to prioritizing inherited projects, Umahi stressed that under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, infrastructure development was receiving unprecedented attention.
“All major road projects inherited by Mr. President are ongoing. He has given them priority attention. This administration believes in continuity and results, not political excuses,” he emphasized.
Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Oborevwori, speaking at the event, reiterated the significance of the project in boosting economic activities and national integration.
Representing President Tinubu, he remarked, “This occasion is not just about flagging off a road project—it is a testament to this administration’s unwavering commitment to economic development, national integration, and infrastructure renewal.”
He further highlighted the benefits of the project, stating, “The construction of the access road is a major step towards strengthening our nation’s connectivity. This road will ease movement, facilitate trade, and enhance economic opportunities for the people of Delta, Anambra, and beyond. It is yet another proof that under this administration, infrastructure development remains a top priority for fostering economic growth and national unity.”
Governor Oborevwori also commended the collaborative efforts of the governments and people of Delta and Anambra States, stressing the importance of collective responsibility in infrastructure development. “Infrastructure development is not just the responsibility of the Federal Government; it requires the collective effort of all stakeholders, including the State Governments, Local Communities, and Private Sector Partners.”
Addressing the contractors, he urged them to uphold the highest standards of quality and ensure timely completion of the project. “To our esteemed contractors, I urge you to ensure the highest standards of quality and timely completion of this project. This is not just a road; it is a legacy of progress that will serve generations to come.”
The Governor extended his gratitude to traditional rulers, community leaders, and all stakeholders involved in the initiative. “Your support and dedication to the success of this project reflect our shared commitment to building a better, more connected Nigeria. As we look forward to its completion, let us all continue to work together for the development of our great nation,” he concluded.
The Federal Government assured that funding for the project is secured, with 30% of the contract sum ready to be disbursed. Strict timelines and performance monitoring measures will be enforced to ensure its timely completion.
